Time of incorporation of field legume herbage and its influence on the growth and yield of upland rice

An experiment was conducted for two croppings to evaluate the effects of green manuring at different stages of field legume growth on some physical and chemical properties of soil and on the succeeding crops of upland rice; and, to determine the profitability of incorporating field legumes at their various stages of growth. Three species of field legumes namely: mungbean, cowpea, and bushbean were designated as the mainplot while four times incorporation of the herbage as the subplot. The various times of incorporation were: at flowering stage, after the 1st priming, after the 2nd priming and after the 3rd priming. Results indicated that incorporation of mungbean and bushbean resulted in significantly lower bulk density values of the soil after the harvest of the first crop of rice than when using cowpea as green manure. Soil pH, OM, P, and K contents of the soil planted to rice were not markedly affected by the species and times of field legume incorporation. Generally, the growth and yield parameters of both crops of rice were not significantly influenced by the treatments used. This indicates the feasibility of modifying the usual practice of green manuring at flowering stage to later stages of legume growth without necessarily sacrificing its expected grain yield. Cowpea was the most suitable green manure for upland rice. Its use likewise resulted in the highest combined net income for two croppings of rice.
