Acid water may adversely influence fish physiology at various life stages: oogenesis, spermatogenesis, embryonic development. High mortalities of larvae in acidic water have been recorded, as well as inhibition of growth and pathological changes in liver and gut epithelial lining, muscle layers and connective tissue and in heart, kidney and brain.
