Effect of maturation and maize cobs structure on yield and cobs silage quality

During the years 1981-85 the effect of harvest time on the yield and fodder quality of 3 maize varieties of various cob structure and maturity was studied. The cobs were harvested at the following stages maturity: milk-waxy of about 35 percent d.m., waxy - 45 percent d.m. and full 55 percent d.m. and silaged in two variants - with and without husk. The highest yield of dry matter and energy, both for cobs and cobs with husk was obtained when harvested at full maturity. The most favourable composition and the highest nutrition value had the silage from cobs at full maturity. Silage from cobs with husk contained on average by 2.5 to 3.0 percent more fiber and their feeding value was lower by 10-20 percent. It was proved that feeding value of silage from cobs with or without husk was in linear dependence on their dry matter content. Maize cob silage made from cobs without husks was fully useful for pigs feeding only when harvested at full maturity stage. When cobs were harvested at early stages the silage had worse and limited value for pigs feeding. In case of making silage from cobs with husks it can be used in pigs feeding on limited scale only when harvested cobs were fully matured
