A case of citrus wilting in the coastal plain of Suriname

The results of an investigation on a large wilting of fruit-bearing citrus trees are presented. In studying the possible relationship of wilting with plant pathogenic micro-organisms, laboratory and greenhouse tests were conducted beside extensive disease surveys. Based on the preliminary data, some factors of the soil-environment fertility status and texture in two sites of the estate, were studied in relation to the wilt symptoms and growth vigor of trees. The citrus wilting proved to be a non-pathogenic injury, caused primarily by a marked shallow and deficient root system in a clay soil with impeded drainage. The severe root rot resulted from a prolonged high soil water-table in an extremely wet rainy season followed by an equally extreme period of drought in 1976. As a consequence the trees were unable to meet their water needs and wilted. Revival of most trees were observed in the following rainy season.
