Pest-control experiments on cucumber and gherkin in Suriname
1983
Segeren, P.A. (Agricultural Experiment Station, Paramaribo (Suriname))
In two field experiments on cucumber and gherkin the following six insecticides were tested against pickle worm, Diaphania nitidalis (Stoll)(Lep. Phralidae), in order to replace mevinphos: carbaryl, 0.17 % a.i.; trichlorphon, 0.15 % ai; fenvalerate, 0.02 % a.i.; pirimiphosmethyl, 0.1 % a.i.; tetrachlorvinphos, 0.1 % a.i.; and mevinphos, 0.05 % a.i. Mevinphos was applied on the crops and in another treatment, on the soil. The best control of pickle worm was obtained with carbaryl in both experiments (less than 5 % infestation) followed by trichlorphon and fenvalerate. Application of mevinphos to the roots did not control the pest. Some control of aphids was observed with carbaryl, mevinphos and pirimiphosmethyl.
