[Breeding some prawns mix Artemia in soil ponds]

Objective of this experiment is to integrate the culture of broodstocks of both P. monodon and P. merguiensis into Artemia farming by adjusting salinity and other essential environmental factors in the ponds to conditions or values similar to those in the sea. The experiment was conducted in Artemia farm located at Tambon Lampukbia, Amphur Banlaem, Petchburi Province. 25,000 P. merguiensis PL15 and 50.000 P. monodon PL15 were stocked in each 2.5 rai pond. Artificial feed, supplemented by fresh feed such as mussel meat and Artemia biomass were applied. After 4.6 months, gonad of P. merguiensis in the pond were observed to have developed. Fecundities of ovary depended on the age and the size of shrimp. It was found that 16 out of 23 of 13.5-18.0 cm size spawners spawned about 34,000-200,000 eggs each, for a total around 1,590,000 eggs. The hatching rate was 13.3-97.4 % from 13 spawners while the survival rate from Nauplii to PL15 was 50.0-66.67 %. It was also found that two of stage 4 P. monodon spawners developed in the pond within one and a half years. Twenty P. monodon broodstocks at this age were selected for eye stalk ablation. Within 3-30 days, 13 of spawners were developed and spawned. Fecundities of P. monodon were 75,000-1,050,000 eggs each from 15 spawners (including two spawners from the earthen pond), totalling around 6,451,330 eggs. Eleven out of 15 spawners had fertilized eggs. The hatching rate was 11.4-98.0 % with 40.0-58.3 % survival rate from Nauplii to PL15. This experiment shows the potential of integrated farming of Artemia and shrimp broodstock in salt farms. It may be applied to the broodstock culture of other marine species.
