Effect of ley farming on improving cassava growth on upland infertile soils of northeast Thailand

Comparisons were made between the effects on cassava (Manihot esculenta) growth of three types of legume leys: verano stylo (Stylosanthes hamata cv. Verano), cook stylo (Stylosanthes quianensis cv. Cook), and siratro (Macroptilium atropurpureum cv. Siratro), with and without fertilizer addition. Cassava crop grown after two-year ley were taller than the cassava crop grown continuously. At six months, cassava crop after cook stylo and after verano stylo were 73.8 and 73.2 cm high, respectively; while the continuous cassava crop was 58.3 cm high. Although cassava after siratro at six months was not significantly taller than the crop continuous crop, its height at eight months was similar to other ley crops which were significantly taller than cassava without ley. Data on cassava yield will be presented later when the experiment is completed.
