Effects of elemental sulphur levels on urea-nitrogen utilization by West African dwarf goats and sheep

Sixteen (16) intact West African dwarf goats and eight fistulated sheep weighing 10-23 Kg were used to study the effects of elemental S at four levels, none, 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 %, on the utilization of Urea-N by small ruminants. The results showed that S improved DM intake, live weight gains and N utilization. N was not retained by goats and sheep on low S diets, Rumenal NH3-N and blood urea were significantly (P0.05) affected by S levels. The goats were found to require (0.82g Nd**-1 Wkg**-0.734) for maintenance. The highest live weight gain and retained N were recorded at the 0.5 % supplemental S level, adequate for the 5.7 % urea in diets fed to goats and sheep.
