Utilization of the shrimp by-catch
1982
Slavin, J.W. (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Rome (Italy))
Reviews information available on the abundance and composition of bycatch in the Western Central Atlantic Fisheries (WECAF), Latin America, Guyana and the Gulf of California. Indicates the need of researchers to take a systematic approach to obtaining data elsewhere if government policies are to be redirected towards full utilization of the resource. Suggests the need for studies of economic feasibility, investment analysis, training, and modification of infrastructure. Notes that US shrimp industry plants and ports unable to handle bycatch and labelling and food laws hinder utilization. Reports from Mexico, Colombia, Guyana and India indicate use of shrimp trawlers to catch fish, however handling operations and trawler design need improvement. The potential use of bycatch in human nutrition is explored and comprehensive product technology and marketing studies are recommended.
