The paper deals with the problems of the forest die-back in the Saleka Valley (Yugoslavia). It analyses the production capacity of spruce sites, the growing stock, increment and felling in the past decades. It also analyses the shedding of needles from the crowns as the only external sign of forest die-back, a result of air pollution and climatic extremes in recent years. It gives a more detailed analysis of the impact of the relief, the mezzo-climatic conditions and the parent rock on the damage in the stands and of other stand indicators. It also suggests guidelines for the future orientation of the evolution of forest decline.
