Study of suitable substrata for spruce [Picea abies Karst.] seedling production in Dunemann seed-beds in a nursery on the mountain of Tara [Yugoslavia]

The authors have concluded that the best quality plants of spruce (Picea Abies Karst) were obtained on the control variant (nursery soil 100%, with fertilization). The second place took the plants on the variant consisting of the following substratum: humus from beech forest 60%, nursery soil 10% and granulated mother rock (grus in Serbo--Croatian) 30%. The last place took the plants grown on the variant: peat from Batura 60%, nursery soil 30% and grus 10%. In grus, representing a completely neorganic component of the substratum which is commonly used in this nursery, it was discovered by chemical analysis a large quantity of free CaCO3, influencing the changes of pH value of substrata from acid, neutral to slightly alkali reaction. The increase of pH value from 5.0-7.4 has provoked a linear depression of mean values of the studied plant characteristics. The corresponding negative correlation coefficients show that this dependance is strong and very strong. By uniform substratum qualities and suitable soil reaction the priority will be given to the substratum with basic component representing beech humus, suitable for cultivation and unsuitable for weeds.
