Enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) in Yugoslavia is subject to diagnostics and control in accordance with law (Yugoslav Official Register No. 4301976) and regulations (Yugoslav Official Register Nos. 39/1988). Serology-based diagnostics (AGID, ELISA) is carried out in the specialised laboratories established in Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and the Province of Voivodina. Herds on publically owned farms account for the majority of EBL cases ranging from 1% to 85.60% positively reacting animals in contrast to 0.001% - 22.8% on private holdings. The eradication of EBL is based on slaughtering the positive reactors or their removal to leukotic herds and on permanent serologic examinations. The present paper will concentrate on the legislation and accomplishments in studying the epizootiological status, control and prevention of the disease. In Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina all publically owned flocks have been put under control. Other parts of the country are subject to intensive diagnostics and control of EBL.
