The authors have come to the following conclusions: The age of gilts at the first farrowing was: 399, 366, 395, 402, and 390 days (9, 10, 11, 12 and 13). The number of liveborn piglets in a litter during eight farrowings of sows selected from the litters with 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 liveborn piglets, is the highest in the group 10 (10.53) and the lowest (10.25) in the group 9. There were no statistically significant differences. Sows from the group 9 and 10 realized larger litters per liveborn number compared with the litters they originated from (10.25 and 10.53 piglets). The other groups of sows showed poorer prolificacy than the litter of their origin. Analogous to the number of total farrowed piglets up the group 10, then the number of liveborn decreases to the group 13 and that of total born to the group 12, with an increase of the number of piglets in the group 13 with regard to the group 12. On the average 9.20 piglets per litter have been raised. The variations between the groups from 9.12 (9) and 9.28 (12) are minimal and statistically not significant. The number of stillborn piglets per litter from 0.24 to 0.52 and the percent 2.29 to 4.78 and the losses during the sucking period 1.10 to 1.30 resp. in percentages 10.60 to 12.34 are within the normal losses. The general conclusion, important for the practice, is to select breeding piglets from the litters with 9 and 10 liveborn piglets.
