The presence and activity of [Rhizobium] meliloti and [Rhizobium] trifoli strains in some soil from Serbia [Yugoslavia]

The presence and activity of Rhizobium melioti and Rhizobium trifolii was investigated in 32 and 26 soil samples, respectively, R. meliloti was found in 17 (53,1%) and R. trifolii in 22 (85%) soil samples. R. meliloti was not recorded in the pseudogley, distric cmabisol on terrace sediments and eroded smonitza and R. tirfolii was absent in the loesslike sand and in some distric cambisol on terrace sediments. Number of Rhizobium sp. (R. meliloti and R. trifolii) varied from 10 to 5 x 105 per gram of soil. Positive influence of the plant host on the number of bacteria in the soil was observed. From the soil samples examined, 20 of R. meliloti and 24 of R. trifolii strains were isolated. In regard to nitrogen fixation activity, the isolated strains were either completely inactive, expressed low activity (5 R. meliloti and 2 R. trifolii strains), possessed medium activity (11 R. meliloti and 20 R. trifolii strains), or were very active (4 R. meliloti and 2 R. trifolii strains). The same soil samples contained both active and inactive strains. The presence of inactive strains had a negative influence on the shoot weight of these leguminous plants. Our results demonstrated more extensive variations of nitrogen fixation in the soil covered (sown) by alfalfa than in those covered by red clover, suggesting that an artificial inoculation of alfalfa with active R. meliloti strains would be more necessary and beneficial.
