This paper gives the comparison of two methods for estimating the reaction of corn plants to herbicides: loose proline and plant dry matter content. Ten self-pollinated inbread lines were investigated in controlled conditions. Altrazine, Alachlor and EPTC-Dichlormide were used and the application rate was 10-4 M. The amount of loose proline was estimated in the above ground parts and the roots of 5 day old seedlings. Corn plant dry matter was estimated in the 3-leaf stage in both above ground and ground plants parts. The results of both indices are given as the percentage of deviation in relation to control. The effects of the tested herbicides affected the change in the content of loose proline in the above ground and root parts of the etiolated corn seedlings and the change in plant dry matter in the 3-leaf stage. A strong positive correlation in the change of the loose proline and dry matter content was estimated in the above ground seedling parts treated with alachlor and atrazine whereas in the root parts it proved much feebler.
