Combining ability analysis of yield and yield components in pea [Canterbury, New Zealand]

The feasibility of improving pea yields was investigated. A full diallel experiment comprised five parents (Green shaft, lohiban, Huka, Maro and Combi) and 20 F(1) progenies. Parents were chosen on the basis of varied number of peas/pod and 100 seed weight. Data were obtained on an individual plant basis for yield and yield components. Both GCA and SCA effects were significant for the traits. Direct selection for yield per se on an individual plant basis is not recommended. However, yield could be improved by indirect selection for number of peas/pod provided there is no compensation from other component.
