Some epidemiological aspects of ascarids infection in chicken under the existing conditions of Bangladesh Agricultural University poultry farm

During the period from September 1989 to July, 1990 a study was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Poultry Farm to determine the incidence and intensity of ascarids infection in chickens in relation to their age sex, breed and seasons and to incriminate their possible reservoir hosts/mechanical vectors/transport hosts. In this investigation about 48% chickens (both young and adults) were found to be infected with ascarids. The percentages of infection in young and adults were 31 and 53, respectively. The male chickens had higher infection rate (63%) than the females (38%). All the breeds of chicken at the BAU poultry farm had ascarids infection, with a highest incidence (68%) in the Fayoumi and lower (20%) in the Broilers. A high incidence of ascarids was observed during postmonsoon (October-November) followed by monsoon (July-September) and winter (December-February). A lower incidence was recorded during summer (March-June). Of the two different small birds (house sparrow and wild pigeons) and 7 different arthropods, invertebrates (flour beetles, house flies, blow flies, cockroaches, grasshoppers, ants and earthworms) examined ascarids eggs were detected from flour beetles and cockroaches only. The recovery percentages of ascarids eggs were 17 and 9 from beetles and cockroaches, respectively.
