Study on the embryonic development of Penaeus indicus H. Milne Edwards, 1837 and temperature-salinity effect

The fertilized eggs of Penaeus indicus H. Milne Edwards, 1837 were spherical, faded yellow and 0.25-0.27 mm in diameter. The spawn were found to undergo cleavage within 40 minutes and the embryonic nauplii attained their full sizes in 12.30-13.00 hours and hatching was found to take place within a few minutes (2-3 minutes) depending on temperature and salinity. Rapid development and maximum hatching were found to take place in a period of 12 hours when the water temperature was maintained between 28.00 deg. C and 30.00 deg. C and the salinity between 28.00% and 30.00%.
