[Diphyllobothriasis in introduced salmonids in lakes of Southern Chile: pathological aspects and relations with human infections domestic animals and piscivorous birds]

To determine diphyllobothriasis in the lakes of Southern Chile, 432 introduced salmonids (Oncorhynchus mykiss and Salmo trutta), 1.501 persons, 166 dogs, 53 cats, 64 pigs and 46 gulls (Larus dominicanus and Larus maculipennis), from riverside communities of 13 lakes were examined between 1989 and 1990. Plerocercoids of Diphyllobothrium were determined in salmonids from 12 lakes. The prevalence and mean intensity of infection in fishes from different lakes presented, in some cases, significant differences. In general, infection by Diphyllobothrium in salmonids was musculature of fishes, associated with the consumption of smoked and salted salmonids sustained the focus of human infection in the riverside communities of the Panguipulli and Rinihue lakes. Salmonids from Southern lakes (Todos los Santos, Llanquihue and Rupanco) showed infection by D. dendriticum. In other lakes, coexistence of D. latum and D. dendriticum was determined. The preys consumed by the examined salmonids suggest that they become infected, principally, through the consumption of autochthonous fishes.
