Economic aspects of milk production in large-capacity barns

The average yearly milk yield of cows in large-capacity stables in the Czech Republic increased from 3182 to 4022 litres in the years 1980 to 1989, and it was identical with the average performance of cows reared in the Czech Republic. In this period the cost of 1 litre of milk increased from 3.72 to 5.09 Kcs (CSK) and the total income (including all bonuses) rose form 3.88 to 5.30 Kcs per 1 litre of milk. On average, milk production was slightly paying only due to bonuses to buying prices. The achieved performance was influenced significantly by the bulk feed consumption per unit of production (r=0.694), and the prime cost of 1 litre of milk was influenced first of all by the reached performance (r=-0.425). A relation between daily milk yield (x) and prime cost of 1 litre of milk (y) is expressed by the nonlinear equation y = 12.305 - 1.275x + 0.0465x2 (index of correlation = 0.620).Minimum values of the prime cost of 1 litre of milk and of the main items are recorded for the yearly output of 5,000 to 5,300 l milk per head. Linear relations indicate that an increase in milk yield by 1 litre of milk per head/day leads to a decrease in prime cost of 1 litre of milk by 0.30 Kcs. Factors influencing the production and economic results of cow rearing are discussed.
