Reasons for differences in early potato variety performance

Four-year field trials were performed with eight very early and early varieties to study their performance by means of some growth analytical characteristics and velocity of photosynthesis products accumulated. The structure of the yield forming components, total tuber yield and tubers of the size 4 to 7 cm were investigated at the same time. The results obtained in two varieties of the highest performance (Sarka, Ostara) and two varieties with lower performance (Kera, Gloria) of this set were analyzed in detail. Some specific features of this crop were pointed out. These are to be considered while evaluating the productiveness as well as some physiological factors which are considerably reflected in the dry-matter production.
