The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of different N, P and K application rates on the nutrient uptake in the period of the flowering onset and to test the possibility to predict tuber yield and nitrate contents in tubers in the period of physiological ripeness according to the nutrients taken up from the period of flowering. It was found that fertilization treatments influence N, K, Ca and Mg uptake and the effect of the year has been demonstrated by N, P and K uptake. Fertilization treatments influenced the tuber yield, though not nitrate content in tubers which was highly influenced only by the year. A high dependence was found between nitrogen taken up until flowering and the tuber yield and between phosphorus taken up and the unit of nitrogen (ratio P/N) in the plant at the onset of flowering and NaNO3 content in tubers after harvest. The possibility to provide corrective measures in the potato nutrition by nitrogen and phosphorus in the form of additional fertilizing in early stages of the growing season of potato stands was confirmed.
