The effect of the post-harvest treatment (thermosanitation) on the seed yield of some grass species

In 1986-1989 the effect of different methods of post-harvest treatment (thermosanitation closely after seed harvest in the spring and low cutting at the end of the growing season) on the formation of fertile culms and the seed yield in seed producing cultures of perennial ryegrass, red fescue, meadow fescue, smooth-stalked meadow grass and golden oat grass was studied. An evaluation of three-harvest years demonstrated that burning of stubble or straw closely after seed harvest preceded by defoliation has a stimulative effect both on formation of fertile stalks and on the seed yield in all species under study. This treatment retarding the natural decline in seed yield, which occurs from the second harvest year, was especially evident in red fescue. Through thermosanitation, the yield may be increased and the performance of the seed producing stand may be maintened for a longer time.
