Retrospective analysis and present view of nitrate content in herbage from grassland

Findings concerning short-rotation grazing when the cattle grazed the grass which was 13 cm high and the sheep that of 6 cm height are quite new in our conditions. Besides the actual grazing of animals, simulated grazing in form of frequent cuts was evaluated; both practices were evaluated in grassland fertilized with 0, 100 and 200 kg N per ha. In comparison with hay mowing, the content of nitrates was always higher in short-rotation grazing and it very often exceeded the theoretical limits for safe feed. But no health disorders have been observed in the animals since 1986 that could be related to the bad quality of forage.
