The feasibility study concerning the logging robots "walking" on standing trees is based on an analysis of elasticity and strength and of the requirements for the electronic system to control the machine. The strength considerations take into account the moments needed to uproot the standing trees and the bending moments needed to break the trees. From the viewpoint of these two moments, the contemplated logging robots are on the limit of feasibility. The electronic control system would have to consist of a digital computer (microcomputer) and would have to be equipped with a number of different sensors. This implies the danger of a high failure rate - too high with respect to the high price of the robot. The conclusion is that feasibility of such robots is problematic.
