In an operational trial the effects of administration of a probiotic preparation with the active ingredient Lactobacillus casei CCM 4160 were investigated on the weight gains and mortality of weanling piglets. The preparation was administered to test sows in morning feed rations for 12.84 days, beginning 2.68 days before parturition. The test group contained 19 sows (171 piglets), the control group where no probiotic preparation was administered comprised 18 sows (163 piglets). At the age of 14 days the test piglets (P) had the weight gains higher by 10.39 per cent than the control piglets (K) (K=2.271 kg, P=2.507 k). The test group also had the lower mortality rate (K=12.88 per cent, P=9.36 per cent). The weanlings had the higher weight in the test group: by 3.81 per cent. The average daily weight gain of test piglets was 153 g, that of control piglets made 142 g. The number of diarrhoea days was higher in the control group (K=3.14, P=2.58 days per piglet). Twenty piglets died in the test group, in the control group it was 21 piglets.
