The composition and characteristics of milk of dairy cows fed a wilted grass silage diet

In three long-range feeding trials the effects of feed ration consisting of preserved grass matter were investigated as exerted on the composition and technological characteristics of milk. The test feed ration, that means wilted grass silage and minimum rates of concentrated mixtures, was compared with other feeds, combined with grazing and oat silage. In the trials with a set of twelve dairy cows of the Slovak Pied breed, the long-range feeding of wilted grass silage did not have any negative impacts on produced milk. On the other hand, the balanced diet, consisting of wilted grass silage, affected positively the milk quality (dry matter 13.05 per cent, fat 4.20 per cent, yoghurt test 31.90 (2.5 mmol/l), free fatty acids 7.98/kg fat, iodine number 30.90). After certain subjective factors in the sphere of hygiene and sanitation have been removed, it will be possible with the use of preserved grass matter to produce milk for the highest-quality products.
