The quality of silages made of fodder beet and straw, nutrient digestibility and dry matter intake

The quality and nutritive value were compared in silages made of fodder beet with an addition of 20 per cent maize husks or 10 per cent barley straw. The silages had high quality: pH values were 4.29 and 4.14, respectively, the proportions of lactic acid in the total acid content 72.46 per cent and 69.32 per cent, respectively. In beet silages the sugar content decreased considerably in comparison with its content in the feeds before ensiling. The loss of weight and dry matter due to the effluents was insignificantly lower in the silage with barley straw. The dry matter intake was insignificantly higher when the bullocks were fed beet silage with maize husks. The nutrient digestibility, determined by a direct method in bullocks, was higher with respect to all nutrients when the animals were administered beet silage with maize husks. Organic matter digestibility was 73.61 and 66.76 per cent, respectively. The difference was statistically insignificant.
