The effect of stand establishment on yield formation of some lucerne varieties

In field trials the effects of seeding without a nurse crop, sowing under oats forage and spring barley for grain on the first cut yield in the second year of vegetation in five lucerne varieties were tested. Dry matter yield, stand height, stand bulk density, dry matter content at harvest, and proportion of blank spaces were evaluated. Yields from undersowing in barley were also processed by path analysis. In the average of three years, BU-489 had higher yields than the variety Nitranka. Residual effect of stand establishment with the highest yields without a nurse crop and with the lowest yields from the stands sown under barley was also important. The effect of stand establishment was visible in the values of stand height and bulk density. Dry matter content responded conversely. Stands from undersowing in oats and barley had significantly higher dry matter content at harvest than the stands sown without a cover crop. From path analysis of yields from undersowing in barley follows that the stand height and stand bulk density were the most important means for compensation of losses caused by a nurse crop.
