A review of studies on growth and reproductive performance of the different breeds of sheep and goats in Ghana
1988
Moffat, S.N-K.
Reviews literature on reproductive performance of goats and sheep in Ghana especially for local dwarf goat, forest type sheep and the Nungua Blackhead sheep. Genetic and environmental factors affect growth, and weight of sires and dams considerably affect their offsprings. Heavier dams and sires produced heavier birthweight of the young. Rates of growth of forest type and Nungua Blackhead lambs are slow. Grazing under plantation crops is advocated with supplementation of dry season feed. Prolificacy is higher in the local dwarf goat than in both forest type and Nungua Balckhead sheep. Puberty is 3.5 to 6 months, 5-7 months and 4-5 months for dwarf goat, Forest type sheep and Nungua Balackhead sheep respectively with average length of estrus at 17-18hrs, 18-35hrs and 17-33hrs respectively; estrus cycle in the same order are 18-24 days, 18-21 days and 20 days; gestation 141-153 days, 150 days and 150 days respectively; post-partum estrus 83.5 days, 66.5 days and 54 days respectively
