A Method of topical treatment for canine lick acral dermatitis: Clinical evaluation in 9 cases

The results of topical treatment, applied in 9 cases of canine lick acral dermatitis have been evaluated in this paper. Diagnosis was based mainly on the history and clinical picture. These data as well as the probable initiating factors of this psychogenic dermatosis (boredom in 4 cases, new owner in 2, restricted activity in 1, carpal joint injury in 1, allergic inhalant dermatitis in 1) are reported in the paper. The single sublesional injection of 1 ml containing 40 mg long-acting methylprednisolone acetate in suspension combined with the daily application of an ointment on the lesion, subsequently covered with a bandage, was the topical treatment we proposed. The ointment contains the very potent synthetic corticosteroid Clobetasone proprionate (0,05%). All dogs were completely cured after applying this therapeutic regime for 3 to 4 weeks. Moreover, the etiopathogenesis, the differential diagnosis and the various therapeutic regimes, used in the past or still in use, are reported and discussed.
