Some suggested strategies for the design and analysis of the investigations at the Moblissa dairy unit

Agronomic investigations could be carried out in phases, the first of which involves the analysis of soil and pasture samples randomly taken from representative areas of Moblissa. A stratified sample is recommended. The next phase of the agronomic work is the testing of critical minerals in 6 to 12-acre plots to determine dose response levels, effect of frequency of application and residual effects. The final agronomic phase concerns methods of pasture establishment and maintenance. In studying grazing management and pasture utilization, problems may arise, in that, the results observed from animals grazed on an experimental basis do not always apply to a commercial basis. The use of covariance analysis for three or more stocking rates on the experimental results for two or more treatments can overcome this problem. The pasture nutritive value evaluations may be best investigated with a conventional randomised block design giving extra replication to control treatments.
