Modernization of the pig progeny test

A significant variance of body weight was observed in young pigs sent to progeny test in recent years. Though the average body weight of the piglets was 30 kg at the start of the progeny test, the variance is greater than acceptable, at a variation coefficient of 15.8 o/o of the examined population 21.5 o/o are outside the single /+/ and /-/ dispersion interval. As testing of progenies begins at a determined age /on their 90th day/, the increase of the initial live weight at testing became observable. Thus such cases could be observed also in the analysed population, where the fattening period passed on the central station deviated by 1-1.5 months, because of body weight differences at the beginning of examination /30-33 kg/. This can invalidate the comparability of the results. To eliminate such casual deteriorating factors, the Hungarian progeny test standard has been modified so that only those piglets can be examined when their live weight does not surpass 30 kg at the age of 90 days. Thus the representation of litter average can be secured.
