Prophylactic efforts in the Hungarian tobacco industry

At present the measure of filter ventilation in Hungarian cigarettes is between 20 and 50 %. As a result of improvements in the tobacco cutting equipment and the processing technology, the mass of cuts filled into a cigarette was reduced and thus the amount of detrimental agents in the smoke decreased. The most important change was achieved by the expansive technology. The net efficiency of expansion amounts to 35-45 % for stemcut and 20-30 % for leafcut, depending on tobacco quality. The quantity of tobacco in a single ciagarette is 6 % less than it was in 1985. The tar content in the smoke decreased from 23.29 mg/piece in 1985 to 18.70 mg (about 20 %), the nicotine content from 1.17 mg to 1.05 mg (about 10 %), the carbon monoxide content from 19.40 mg to 19.10 mg by 1989. The total tar content "consumed" in Hungary decreased from about 650 t/year in 1985 to about 30 t in 1989, while the nicotine "consumption" decreased from about 510 to 27.
