Improvement in the production conditions for sunflowers on intensely acidic sandy soils by means of ameliorative replacement of Ca and Mg

The results of 10 years of experiments aimed at increasing the fertility of acidic, Mg-deficient sandy soils in the Nyirseg region of North-East Hungary have proved that such soils require an adequate level and proportion of Mg replacement in addition to liming. In these soils, liming agents containing a substantial quantity of basic Mg compounds /5-12 o/o Mg/ had a more favourable effect on the soil fertility than liming agents containing only CaCO3. An ameliorative level of Ca and Mg replacement created a more balanced mineral supply for sunflowers. On acidic, Mg-deficient sandy soils, liming agents with a higher Mg content and a lower Ca/Mg ratio were suitable to change the unfavourable cation ratio. By contrast liming agents containing only CaCO3 were unable to lower the K/Ca+Mg ratio in the plants, since the increased Ca uptake led to a reduction in the Mg content. In addition to sunflowers, tobacco, maize and winter wheat also responded with a considerable yield increase to ameliorative Ca and Mg replacement.
