Competitiveness of horticulture in Hungary

In Hungary the volume of horticultural production was the same in the 1980's as in the previous decade, making up 14 % of the agricultural production. Its volume decreased in comparison to that of other agricultural products. Vegetable production made up 40 % of the horticultural production, with fruit and grape production making up 30 % of each. 70 % of the horticultural production was given by smallholders, this figure was 80 % for vegetable production. For fruit and grape production, 40 % came from large farms. The quantity of yield was 2 million t vegetables, 1.3-1.9 million t fruit, with large fluctuations in the quantity of grape production. The domestic consumption of horticultural products is very flexible, depending on the quality, price quantity and solvent demand. The critically weak point of this sector is trading. More efficient marketing activities are needed in both foreign and domestic trading. There is also a need for the purchase of better production implements and a reorganization of production based on an accurate survey of demands.
