The production of the registered dairy cow population

The large-scale cattle population in Hungary is completely registered. The present registered population objectively establishes the progeny performance test of the young bulls of progeny-tested Holstein-Friseian type and the safe control of the inherited properties of the breeding animals. The milk production per cow is increasing though at a decreasing rate. The average milk production is 5435 kg with 3,67 o/o milk fat content in the registered cow herds. With the progress of grading, however, the milk production per cow did not increase to the desired degree, primarily as a consequence of environment conditions. The greatest milk production is reached by almost all genotypes in the 3-4th lactations. It decreases considerably only in the 8-9 lactations. A fundamental breeding interest is therefore the effort for a long production period under consolidated circumstances. It is infavourable that the age at first calving is 28,3 months, thus the first covering is consequently unjustified late.
