Animal health experiences of the reconstruction of pig plants

Reconstruction generally improved the technical level of the pig plants, but the economic efficiency of pork production did not improve in the expected measure. The average daily body weight gain was about 500 g and nearly 4 kg feed was required to produce 1 kg live weight. The porkers reached the slaughter weight in 160-270 days and the reproductive life performance of the breeding sows was low. The number of herds equally free from brucellosis, leptospirosis and Aujeszky's disease could not be increased at the desired rate. In order to establish herds free of the three mentioned infections vaccination with a gI-Aujeszky's vaccine of the infected herd should be introduced. If attestation of the herds is to gain ground, subsidization spent on the change of stock must be replaced by a system of subsidization of slaughter pigs originating from attested herds, covering the input. A research and development programme should be ellaborated to improve and modernize the feeding system /lactic acid preservation of pulps prepared from scraps for animals and solution of the problem of fodder crops contaminated with moulds/. Ground area and airspace per animal should in general be increased.
