Epidemiology of abortion in Irish dairy cattle on six research farms
1992
Mee, J.F. (Teagasc, Moorepark Research Centre, Fermoy, Co. Cork (Ireland))
The effects of year, season, parity and farm on the occurrence of mid-and late-term abortion in dairy cows were examined using data collected from 6,184 parturitions on six research farms over a seven-year period (1984-1990). A total of 107 abortions (1.7) were investigated and 91 foeti were examined. Foetal crown-anus length and birth weight ranged between 24 and 112 cm and 0.7 and 43 kg, respectively. There was no significant relationship between the occurrence of abortion and calendar year of calving or farm of origin. The surveyed herds were predominantly spring-calving and abortions followed a distinct seasonal pattern. Between July and December 75 of all abortions occurred when less than 10 of all parturitions took place.
