Feed value of whole crop silage of paddy rice "Hoshiyutaka" for beef cattle was evaluated in two feeding trials using Japanese Black fattening steers and rearing heifers. In the trials four experimental feeds, i.e., rice whole crop silage of Hoshiyutaka (RS), Italian ryegrass hay (IH), flaked corn (FC), and ground rice with hulls (RH) were used. TDN content of experimental feeds and TDN efficiency for growth (body weight gain per TDN intake above maintenance) were determined. TDN content of RS was about 54% in dry matter basis, as high as that on IH. TDN efficiency of RS was about 83% of FC which is known as one of the most popular feeds fro beef cattle in Japan, and the value was higher than that of IH and almost as high as that of RH. It was concluded that RS was better than IH or hay with similar TDN content as the feed for fattening steers and rearing heifers
