[Sheep with extra vertebrae and ribs production in Mongolia]

The number of vertebrae normally found in sheep is 30 (neck-7, vertebrae lumbalis-13, vertebrae thoracales-6, sacrum-4). Investigations show that there are 3 types of extra vertebrae in Mongolian sheep, which have 31-32 vertebrae and 14 pairs of ribs (1 or 2 extra vertebrae and 1 extra pair of ribs). Observations have also shown that this strain is more productive than ordinary sheep (liveweight 4.5-5.0 kg, dressing percentage: 2-3%, skin 6.7-12.3 dm2 and bone weight: 168-366 g). It was discovered that about 20-25% of all Mongolian sheep have the extra vertebrae and ribs and they are evenly distributed throughout the sheep population. The study shows that the heritability of this extra vertebrae factor is 91-95% from inbreeding and 81% from the insemination of ordinary ewes
