Implementation of IPM [integrated pest management] in cotton in the Philippines

The general IPM [integrated pest management] for cotton is composed of three major components, namely, cultural, biological and chemical control. The integration of the different components, however, varies according to the requirements of the specific local conditions. The proper combinations of pest control strategies are discussed. Some problems encountered in the implementation of IPM in cotton are: (1) limited farmers knowledge in the identification of insect pests, especially bollworm eggs and beneficial insects; (2) lack of appreciation by farmers on the effects of cultural/biocontrol components; (3) lack of trained technicians and farmer leaders in disseminating the IPM technology; (4) untimely availability of chemical input; (5) no defined cropping in some areas; (6) clash of some cultural components with standard cultural practices (tobacco or corn as trap crops); and (7) supply and sustained availability of Trichogramma.
