Characterization of oils from indigenous oil seeds; I: Pili [Canarium ovatum]

The pili nut meat contains 53.17% oil, 15.97% crude protein, 3.16% ash and 9.54% crude fiber. The pili pulp (fleshly pericarp) contains 19.67% oil, 0.33% crude protein, 10.34% ash and 21.77% crude fiber. Characterization of the oil showed iodine values of 36 and 39 for nut meat and pulp, respectively. High saponification values were obtained. The free fatty acid number of pulp (20.28%) was higher than the nut meat oil (0.53%). High FFA indicate extensive hydrolysis. Similarly, the specific gravity of pulp oil was higher than the nut meat oil. The major fatty acid in both nut meat and pulp oil is oleic acid (51.31% and 68.57%, respectively), followed by palmitic acid 25.98% and 18.61%, respectively. Further characterization of the oils and storage stability studies will be done.
