The collection of local sweet potato germplasm consists of 380 accessions. The accessions are field maintained at Canlubang (150 m asl) in 10 hill-plots and multiplied 2 to 3 times per year. Characterization of collection was done for priority plant descriptors and data is stored in a computerized database. Polycross seeds are maintained of selected accessions having high root yield and dry matter content. Results of yield evaluation indicated that yield per plant reached 1150 g. in the best clone during the dry season at 120 days harvest. However yields were severely reduced during the rainy season when root formation was delayed. Dry matter content of roots ranged from 16.1 to 41.3% with an overall mean of 30.4% in a sample of 179 accessions at 90 days harvest. A total of 273 accessions were screened for resistance to the sweet potato weevil (Cylas formicarius) under laboratory conditions and 16 promising accessions were identified to have little root damage; promising accessions need further screening for resistance.
