Yield stability of commercial corn hybrids in the Philippines

A number of yellow corn hybrids tested in the National Cooperative Test from 1986 WS [wet season] to 1989 WS were evaluated for yield performance and stability. Other traits which were evaluated include plant height, days to silking, and the yield components: kernel rows, ear length, shelling percentage, and prolificacy. The genotypes were grouped into sets with the objective of including the most number of common genotypes within a set and to obtain data from more environments in estimating the stability parameters. The combined analysis of variance in most cases showed highly significant genotype x season x location interaction indicating that the genotype performance were not the same under different environments. On the basis of the stability parameters, regression coefficients and deviation from regression (Eberhart and Russell's), several of the hybrids tested within the period were found to be stable for yield. However, only the following hybrids gave above average performance in addition to being stable: P3228, SMC 321, SMC 323, CPX811, YCPG81, CPX821, and CX757. In evaluating the yield components, it was found that stability in a number of yield components did not necessarily impact yield stability. However, among the yield components, ear length was observed to have greater association with grain yield.
