For centuries, rice has been grown for grain. The use of other plant parts is very low priority. One aspect that has received little attention is the possible use of rice leaves as herbage. Rice herbage can be of great value as animal feed. The rice crop has a high potential for herbage production because the seed is inexpensive, the crop is easy to establish, grows rapidly, it recovers well from cutting, it has different growth durations, and biomass production is relatively high. Rice herbage has high nutritional value, and is safe and readily available in most animal production areas. Methods for improved rice herbage production include agronomic practices, utlilization of cultivar characteristics, and cutting treatments. In the deepwater areas, herbage removal does not reduce rice grain yield. In fact, it has increased grain yield through appropriate balance of crop canopy at each growth stage. Rice herbage can be of great benefit to crop-livestock farmers in developing countries where natural pasture is limited.
