Practical management techniques to reduce golden snail damage in lowland rice

The golden snail ravages newly transplanted rice seedlings causing numerous missing hills in the field. Missing hills, if not replanted, will considerably reduce rice yield. Farmers around the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) [Silang, Cavite, Philippines] project site use an expensive chemical spray to control golden snail. Some snails are killed but many survive and multiply rapidly once irrigation water is introduced to ricefields. To solve this problem, IIRR through its low-input rice production project, developed some techniques to reduce golden snail damage to lowland rice. These include the introduction of ducks in the ricefields, the use of wire mesh screens to exclude snails, and appropriate water management.
