Water quality assessment and management of Laguna de Bay (Philippines): concepts, problems and strategies
1990
Barril, C.R.
The conceptual framework for the assessment and management of the water quality of Laguna de Bay [Philippines] provides a wholistic and integrated approach to the resource management of the lake. The concept of water quality was made clear through a distinction between water quality criteria and water quality standards. Assessment of the ambient water quality of Laguna de Bay against its present classification as Class C revealed that the waters of Laguna de Bay is now lower than its Class C prescription. By and large, the observations on nutrient levels, highly organic nature of sediments, high temperature and seasonal low dissolved oxygen fluctuations, coupled with the high surface-to-volume ratio of the lake, all point to the advanced state of eutrophication of Laguna de Bay. One very alarming observation is the very high turbidity of the lake water caused primarily by heavy siltation from the watershed. The contributing factors to this and the general deterioration of the water quality of the lake have been discussed together with their ecological impacts.
