Factors affecting performance of communal irrigation system members: the case of Bugaan communal irrigation system [Laurel, Batangas, Philippines]
1990
Poudel, R.
Results revealed that agricultural income had a significant positive relationship with the amount of amortization. No other characteristics had significant relationship with it. Kinship and political relationship had significant positive relationship to members' involvement in irrigation conflicts, whereas, farmer-to-farmer reciprocal relationship, income from agricultural sources, number of agricultural tools and members' attitudes toward their performance in CIS [communal irrigation system] and their satisfaction with water availability had a negative relationship. Although most of the characteristics had significant positive relationships with members' participation in different organizational activities, and repair and maintenance works of the system, political relationship and income from non-agricultural sources had negative effects on both activities. The political relationship and kinship relation had a significant negative impact on members' amount of time devoted to repair and maintenance, while farmer-to-farmer reciprocal relationship, agricultural income and member's attitudes toward their performances had positive impact. The kinship relation had also significant negative effect on donation ability to repair and maintenance, but farmer-to-farmer reciprocal relationship and income from agricultural sources had positive effects. The location of the members' farm within the service area had no significant effect on any of their performance except their participation in repair and maintenance. Members' satisfaction with water availability had affected their performance.
