Effect of protein content in maize silage diets on ammonia nitrogen level in the rumen of lambs

An experiment on Polish Merino lambs fed isoenergetic diets containing 10.8, 12.2, 13.6 or 16.9 percent of protein was carried out. No significant changes in rumen N-NH4 content in lambs fed the diet containing up to 13.6 percent of protein was stated. The diet containing 16.9 percent of protein caused a significant increase in N-NH4 level in the rumen of lambs. Nitrogen requirements of rumen microorganisms were covered by rations containing 13.6 percent of crude protein in 1 kg of dry matter of diet
